My Love and Addiction to Houseplants

I grew up on a small farm in Iowa and was always outside as a kid. One thing that has stuck with me throughout my own growing years, is the love of plants and growing them. The springtime gives me the opportunity to amass more houseplants for my room and learn how to take care of another small life.

I don’t know specifically why I love plants so much, though I think growing up on a farm where plants literally pay the bills might have had some effect. I currently have five houseplants in my dorm which are relatively easy to take care of. I only water them about once a week, or whenever they look thristy. Two are succulents which really don’t need watered all that often, and one is an air plant. Air plants are nice because all you have to do is soak it in a bowl of water for about two hours every two weeks and it does the rest.

Most of my plants I get from Walmart during the spring or summer, though I like to say that I rescue them from Walmart because they don’t take care of most of the plants the way that they should. I have also become a much braver soul and began to order some plants from Amazon. I’ve had a surprising success rate with my plants from online. I had a Hindu rope plant for about two years before I accidentally used a plant food with sodium or other ingredients that are harmful to it.

But here are the houseplants I have now:

Dracaena Marginata

These guys are really easy to take car of as long as you water them every week and make sure to remove any leaves that are browning or droopy.

Jade Plant

One of my succulents that is super easy to take care of. It’s one of those set and forget kind of plants. Their leaves are mostly water and they can go for a long long time without water.

Olympia False Aralia

One of my more challenging plants. They will let you know when they are being of or under-watered by having leaves drop or become brown. I mostly only water when the top inch of soil is dry and crumbly.

Echeveria

Another great succulent that I got for my anniversary from my boyfriend. It doesn’t need a ton of water and you can tell when it will need watered when some of the bottom leaves become pruny.

I definitely want to get a bunch more plants, but right now I just don’t have the space. I would love to reorder my Hindu rope plant, just because of how unique it looks in comparison to some of my other plants. I would also love to get into growing my own bonsai at some point when I have time, but I would definitely need much more time and money for that. There are some nice bonsai kits on Amazon that seem promising, and I’m sure once spring rolls around that there will be plenty new additions to my indoor urban garden.
